I have the same problem, although mine isn't confined to a single gesture. It seems to happen anytime I accidentally touch the screen. It's almost as though my accidental tap moves the insertion point

I too am having the first problem, but not the second. As for the problem in messages, I also use the flick up and hold gesture as a work around.
