Re: Direct touch and flick type
Peter Torpey
Yes, same problem here. Direct Touch seems to get set to "off" when Flicktype is invoked under iOS 14. Even if you turn it "on", the next time you try to use Flicktype it will be turned "off" again automatically. Fortunately the workaround is easy, but hopefully this can be fixed in the app.

No, , am unable to tap on words. I tried doing the word, top, and it said, tip. So I scrolled the crown down and it just said the same thing, flicktype, use digital crown to scroll through suggestions. Since the crown did give me the haptic feedback like it did scroll down, I tapped on the screen like I was choosing the word it scrolled to, but nothing happened. It just acted like I was trying to type another word. I am unable to access the rotor because the rotor is only available on the new watch os 7. I do not think you can install that unless you are running ios 14 on your phone, and because of multiple bugs, I am not doing that at this time. Thanks for looking into this issue for me! Chris

For me, on the iPhone this behavior started occurring in iOS 14. The rotor seems to get automatically put to "Touch typing = Off" when Flicktype is invoked. I believe Flicktype only works with touch typing set to "On". At least the workaround is simple, just change that setting on the rotor. Unfortunately, next time you come back to type, the rotor will again be automatically set to touch Typing = off again.

iOS 14 issue when sharing News articles
Peter Torpey
I have run into this issue a few times when sharing a News article via e-mail and thought you might want to look into it. I am using iOS 14 on an iPhone XR with Voiceover.
Problem: When I try to share a News article via e-mail, Touch typing seems to be automatically set to "off" and FlickType can't be used Steps to reproduce: 1. Open a News article from the Apple News app. 2. Perform a single finger double tap to activate the "Share" button at the top of the article. 3. Select to share via e-mail by performing a single finger double tap on the "E-Mail" button. 4. Perform a single finger double tap in the "To:" field of the email header to activate this edit field. 5. touch the active area of the Flicktype keyboard to activate Flicktype. 6. Now move your finger around the screen to try and find the first letter to type. Note: VoiceOver does not speak anything. 7. Raise your finger and touch the keyboard area again. Note: VoiceOver speaks "Flicktype keyboard" as if you are first activating the keyboard in order to start typing. 8. Use the two finger VoiceOver rotor action to go to the "Touch Typing" item. 9. Flick down with one finger and VoiceOver speaks "On" indicating that Touch Typing is now "On". Presumably it was set to "Off" before. 10. Now that Touch Typing is definitely turned "On", Cancel the sending of this message and follow steps #1- 9 again and you will observe the same result, i.e., Touch Typing is "Off" again even though it was set to "On". Hope that is clear and helps you track down the issue. BTW, Flicktype has been working very well on my phone these days. It has definitely improved since its earlier days on the app store. Thanks. --Pete

Hi Kosta,

Thanks for getting back to me! I am running watch os 6.21. When I try to scroll by using the crown, I do get the haptic feedback, but nothing else really happens. Voice over just says, FlickType, Scroll by using the crown. So I am also not able to select different punctuation or emoji's since scrolling the crown is not working for me. I am hoping you are able to figure it out. Thanks for the help. Chris

Re: Flicktype on watch
Hi Chris,
You can’t access numbers just yet, but for emojis you can do that the usual way by flicking right to insert a period, and then changing that to one of your favorite emojis. What happens when you try to scroll through words with the crown? And what watchOS version are you using? I’d love to track this down and figure out a solution for you. - Kosta

Flicktype on watch
Chris Chaffin
Is anyone currently using flicktype on their Apple Watch? If so, I have a couple of questions.
I am currently not able to scroll through word choices with the crown, and how do you get to where you can type numbers and emojis? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Chris

Re: Caps lock
I miss the ability to hard press in order to capitalize with FlickType. That ability went away when I got my iPhone SE 2020. It would be nice if FlickType had a gesture to turn on caps lock but I don't use this very often so I can manage with the 2-finger tap to capitalize each entered letter.

Hello Leonard, No, not to my knowledge. I have wondered this myself, but generally speaking if I’m having to type a lot of capital letters I use the hard press on my iPhone 8.

Is there a gesture to do a caps lock so you don’t have to keep doing a two finger tap every time you want to capitalize a letter? Thank you.

Simply type the shortcut with the flicktype keyboard and then flick down until you hear your shortcut, and then flick right.

I have several replacement shortcuts. For example, eml is my shortcut to input my email address. What do I need to do to bake this work correctly?

Hello Leonard, Try a one finger flick up and hold or a one finger flick down and hold. Either one should give you the menu tabs across the bottom. I hope this helps! Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores.

I switched to full-size keyboard and now I can’t get to the menus to change the settings. I thought the gesture to go to the menus was a two finger flick up but that doesn’t seem to work.

Re: Misspelling
Everett,
I'm a bit confused by your post because my experience with FlickType is different than yours. When I manually enter a word letter by letter, no space is inserted until I complete entry and do the final flick right. I have never used FlickType without Voiceover so I'm unclear how you expect it to repeat or spell what you typed without Voiceover.

Hello just want to let you guys know of a few problems that I have noticed on FlickType. Number one when I am typing with the keyboard it wants to enter a space which ends up messing up the words every time when I use FlickType. Number two what happened to where we could use FlickType without voice over and it would repeat what we wrote? Thank you
