Combining touch and flick typing

Randy Borst

I use touch typing when I need to use a word but contained in the FlickType dictionary. But then When I flick right to put in In a space and ready the way for my next word to flick,. I get a punctuation mark. How can I correct that?

Hey Randy,
Glad to hear you got it figured out. Happy typing!

I did verify "full access," though the Apple note under that setting indicates that it is for purposes of allowing the developer to transmit all the information I type, including passwords and addresses. That doesn't trouble me in this case, but still, I don't think that has anything to do with the keyboard's having access to the user.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter how I have that setting. I still can't get the keyboard up anymore. Once, when I tap the next keyboard button, the iPhone said "Flick type." The keyboard didn't come up though.

I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it, and that didn't work either.

I thought maybe the problem started when I installed flick type on my Apple Watch, but removing it from there didn't change anything either.

Does anyone have any more suggestions?

BTW do to Apple limitations text replacements do not work in the FlickType container app, they only work while using flicktype in other text fields.

Firstly, I'm unable to get the text replacement function to work? I've set it to on in the settings and the text replacements I've already got defined work fine in the standard iOS keyboard, but not in FlickType.
Is there a trick to it? I'm tapping out the replacement shortcut a character at a time and then swiping to the right with one finger but nothing is replaced.

Thanks,

Now for a suggestion. I've noticed the 3 finger swipe to move forward or back a line at a time is inconsistant or just not working at all in some places. How about ditching the gesture altogether and simply have a 2 finger swipe and hold to jump through each word at a high speed? I think that when FlickType is in standard size mode there is more of a chance of pushing focus outside of the keyboard with 3 finger gestures. Just my 2 cents.

And while I'm at it... For FlickType on the Apple Watch, the swipe down to read what you've typed really throws me out. After using the iOS version for so long, swiping down for word alternatives is now muscle memory. Keeping as many gestures consistant between platforms would be cool.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Re: Suggestion & Question

Chuck Dean

Hello,
After you enter your shortcut for the text replacement, flick right. If this isn't correct, flick down until the suggestion is correct.
I find that when I manually type my two letter shortcuts, the proper text replacement is one or two suggestions down. If you type the two letter shortcut using your regular typing style often the text replacement will be first. Also, if you manually type the two letter shortcut it will be entered into the dictionary and then will always be the first suggestion.☹️

The two and three finger navigation have been problematic in iOS 13, and the developer is aware of this problem. It may be fixed in the next update.

The change to the watch app for suggestion selection was to improve consistency with the flicktype app for the visually impaired and for flicktype notes app which is aimed at the sighted community to generate funds to keep flicktype alive!

I agree, I have been flicking down for other suggestions, but I am sure I will eventually use the digital crown. It's just a new learning curve... But worth it in the long run.

Have a great day!👍

Did you try deleting the keyboard from the keyboard list? Then add it again afterwards.

Hi Kosta,

Wanted to give some feedback regarding the latest beta, and various bugs that I have been encountering. Yes, this is specifically pertaining to the 236 release.

Firstly, and this is not really a bug, one thing I’ve noticed is the higher pitch of Voiceover speech when I tap type and swipe right to get the word that I’ve typed. Voiceover now announces that word in a higher pitch than it ever has before.

Now, to the bugs…

I for one, have encountered bugs while typing in all types of fields and in various apps. So the behavior is not limited to a certain app or type of field. Among the apps that I have encountered these bugs are Whatsapp, Messages, Mail, Safari, Google, Facebook, Messenger, Amazon, and so on…

In regular text fields, while I am typing, when I tap type and swipe right, I hear the word that I’ve tried to type (as I should). However, if I swipe right again to insert a punctuation, like a period, Voiceover simply repeats the previous word that I had typed. Even though, a period has actually been inserted.

Next, I have encountered the bugs that both Ed and JP have already mentioned in prior messages under this thread. “The keyboard doesn’t announce the word or punctuation options/suggestions when flicking up or down”, and, also the bug where “when I type a word, it says space, followed by spelling the word. If I delete the last word, it says beginning of document.”

Unlike Ed and JP however, I have encountered these bugs outside of Outlook. I don’t even have Outlook on my device. I have encountered them in Safari, Whatsapp, the Google app, etc.

Typing in multi-line text fields is almost impossible for me at this point. Whatever I tap type is either repeated twice, or is repeated twice with a sort of a stutter with Voiceover sometimes stuttering on the first part of the word, and sometimes on the last part of the word. I will try and explain this with an example. I was trying to type the following sentence: This version definitely seems to have some bugs.

Here are two variations of how Voiceover feedback has sounded like after I have tried typing each of those words while composing that sentence:

  1. ThisThis VerVersion DefDefinitely se eems seems to ha-have SomeSome bugs
  2. Th-This ersion initely se-eems to he-ave so-ome bugs.

Swiping left either doesn’t do anything, or simply deletes the last word I typed, and I can’t delete anything past that. Tapping and holding in the top half of the screen to have the typed text repeated back, does nothing either.
In addition, at various points during the typing experience, I am not able to swipe up or down to go through the suggestions as the same word keeps getting repeated over and over. Or, swiping up or down produces the "ding" Voiceover sound that suggests that I have reached the top or bottom of the list. The issue with the punctuation also occurs here too; not able to either swipe through the list of punctuation, or the same one is repeated over and over

I hope this gives you some idea and my explanation makes some sense. Basically, I have been encountering a lot of bugs with this new 236 release, and I have to revert back to an earlier version for a smoother and seamless typing experience.

Any instructions on the process would be appreciated.

Hi Randy,
Check to see that Full Access is enabled in Keyboards under Settings. Also, make sure that you are either using Touch or Direct Touch typing. Restart device. HTH
Best,

I have been a subscriber for some time, but hadn't used the app in a couple months or so. Now, suddenly, I can't get the Flicktype keyboard to come up. The "swipe up and hold" gesture doesn't work, and the keyboard is not in my keyboard rotor. The rotor just goes from the regular English keyboard to emoji keyboard and then back.

I have the latest production version and I keep my iOS versions up to date automatically.

Hi Alan,
After spending hours weeding out my dictionary, I got my load time down to about 16 seconds. When the Fliktype version came out with a clear dictionary I said to heck with it and cleared my dictionary. Now everything opens better runs faster, and when I need to I enter the words as I have to. However I’ve decided that once a week I’m going to go into my dictionary and clear out the stuff that’s not supposed to be there you don’t miss spell words etc. Perhaps this will save me from the dredge of all the clutter.

Hi Kosta and List,

I'm running FlickType 5.2 which I believe is the latest version available from the Apps Store. I've got over two thousand words in my dictionary which causes an over 20 second delay in loading the FlickType container app. I have no intention of clearing these custom dictionary entries since that seems self-defeating for even having a custom dictionary. However, it is extremely time consuming attempting to edit these entries on an iDevice since I have to swipe between characters and actions in order to get a spelling of each entry regarding capitalization, etc. and then rotoring back to actions if I wish to delete it. How possible would it be to allow an export and import of a text file of dictionary entries so they could be edited much more quickly using a computer? I'm guessing this may not be feasible because I thought I remembered an export option in previous versions that seems to be gone now. I don't ever recall seeing an option to import a custom dictionary.

If anyone has any suggestions to speed up the editing of the custom dictionary, I'd welcome them. Also, Kosta, if you could comment on how difficult it would be to allow import of a custom dictionary list, that would also be appreciated.

And when I open the dictionary tab in the Flicktype app, the words in my dictionary are completely invisible, even though VoiceOver will speak them out - I thought that in the past they used to be visible?

Re: Build 236

Hello Kosta,
Adding on to Salman, I’ve experienced on Amazon, Safari, Target, WordPress, and some sites that would only relate to me.
It really throws me off not having word pronounced, or getting partial word. My brain just isn’t processing or adapting to build 236. I switched to the public 5.2. It’s solved many of my issues for the most part.
Best,
JP
