I am curious what prevents you from using flicktype as the default keyboard. Are you running into other limitations with Flicktype or are there some tasks that you find easier to do using the standard Apple keyboard?

First, let me say that FlickType on iOS 14.3 has the following two problems that I consistently experience: 1. When I begin text entry for example with the Messages app, my default on screen keyboard is US English. . I typically place focus in the text box and double tap to bring up the on screen US English keyboard. I then place my finger on the spacebar in the bottom middle of the screen and slide left past the dictate button until focus is on the next keyboard button. If FlickType is announced as the next keyboard, I should be able to double tap anywhere on the screen to open my FlickType keyboard in full screen mode. However, this does not happen normally. I've been unable to trust the next keyboard that Voiceover speaks as what will open. Instead, when the next keyboard button has focus, I double tap and hold on the screen and slide my finger up until FlickType is spoken and then I release. FlickType will always open in full screen mode when I use this method. 2. In later iOS 13 versions, FlickType would automatically launch in direct touch mode and work as it's supposed to. This is not the case with iOS 14 at least not with my system. I realize these devices have gotten extremely powerful with a wealth of settings that can vary greatly among devices which can affect our results. However, I believe FlickType and iOS 14 have some incompatibility issue which requires users to turn direct touch on in order for FlickType to work correctly, If this is not done, typing with the FlickType keyboard does not work for me and I also can't close the keyboard or switch to a different keyboard. Read below for the steps I use to work around this issue with the minimum number of gestures. Here is what I do when I'm typing a text message to successfully use FlickType in full screen mode with the least number of gestures: 1. I double tap in the Messages text box to open the on screen US English keyboard which is my default. 2. I place focus in the bottom middle of the screen on the spacebar and slide to the left until the next keyboard button has focus. 3. I single finger double tap and hold and slide my finger up until I hear FlickType and then release. 4. The FlickType keyboard opens in full screen mode. 5. I place my finger in the bottom left corner of the screen where I hear FlickType. 6. I do one rotor clockwise gesture. I do a counter clockwise rotor gesture until I hear direct touch which is usually after only one time. I single finger swipe down once and Voiceover says on. 7. FlickType now types as it should and as it always did under iOS 13.2 or so without all of these direct touch shenanigans. 8. I single finger slide up and hold to close FlickType and return to my default US English keyboard. I hope the above makes sense to others and works for you as it does for me. Hopefully, one of the upcoming iOS versions will return FlickType functioning to how it used to at the end of iOS 13. Re: App Not Working In 3rd Party
Hi Eileen,
Place focus on the messages text box and double tap anywhere on the screen. This should open your default on screen keyboard. Touch in the bottom middle of the screen to the spacebar and slide left past the dictation button to the next keyboard button
and with focus on the next keyboard button, double tap and hold and single finger slide up until FlickType is announced and then release. The FlickType keyboard will be the displayed keyboard or if you have your settings in Flicktype full screen mode, the
entire screen will be in FlickType mode.
I hope this helps.

I'm running the beta of 14.4 on both my phone and ipad. The braille screen input issue still persists, but its not as bad as it was. Flicktype still won't work, unless you enable direct touch, which still must be done every time you wish to use the app. I'm honestly not sure how best to describe that issue when writing a bug report. Using FlickType successfully in full screen mode with iOS 14.x and minimum keystrokes
Hi List,
I said I'd report back after testing the current beta of FlickType in full screen mode on my iPhone SE 2020 running iOS 14.2. First, let me say that I leave my keyboard set to English US with touch typing as the default mode. I find this setting is easiest for inputting short text such as user names and passwords or for quick searches. Second, I primarily use the FlickType keyboard when I'm typing either text messages or emails on my iPhone. If I need to input something longer than these, I'll use my computer's full sized keyboard and transfer the input to my iPhone using the KeyWi keyboard. Finally, ever since upgrading to iOS 14, the FlickType keyboard does not respond when launched in full screen mode when you start tapping keys to enter text. In my case, if I immediately start tapping keys on its launch, no tap sound feedback is provided and I'll get a funny audio sound sort of like the iPhone is burping.
After extensive testing with the Messages app, the following steps work best for me to get FlickType typing correctly in full screen mode:
1. Place focus in the text box and double tap to make sure the on screen keyboard has launched. 2. Find by touch the Next keyboard button in the lower left of your screen and double tap and hold and slide your finger up until FlickType is announced and then release. 3. You will be in FlickType full screen mode. To activate Direct touch so that FlickType works correctly, do the rotor turn gesture once either clockwise or counterclockwise and immediately do it once again in the opposite direction. Direct touch should be announced and single finger swipe down once to turn it on. 4. FlickType should now work as it has in prior versions of iOS. 5. To exit out of full screen mode, single finger slide up the screen and you'll be returned to the US English on screen keyboard for sending your message.
Someone posted here that turning Voiceover off and back on would turn on Direct touch so that FlickType would work correctly but this was not my experience. Remember that your results may vary based on your device and its settings.
I realize that the above requires a few steps that hopefully will be reduced in future iOS versions. In any event, these steps provide the minimum number of taps and gestures needed to get FlickType working in full screen mode under iOS 14.x.
Take care and stay safe.

Hi Alan. I use FlickType in standard mode here and the direct touch issue is present on my SE 2020 running the beta of iOS 14.3. Direct touch has nothing to do with your typing mode. It's supposed to work in self voicing games as well but like FlickType, you have to turn direct touch on in order to play the game without having to turn off Voiceover. Back to the issue with Flicktype, when you're trying to type using the keyboard, when Voiceover says you're in FlickType, turn Voiceover off and back on again. That'll resolve the issue when you use it once or twice.

I'll try your suggestion of removing typing mode from the rotor since I already have touch typing set as my default under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Typing. I really don't think that will change anything because FlickType is supposed to automatically do whatever is needed with direct touch when typing with it and something with iOS 14 is apparently messing it up.

Re: Unable to hear alternate word selections
Yes, that's one of the issues with FlickType and the full screen keyboard. The dismiss gesture and none of the tapped keys register unless you first rotor to direct touch and turn it on. Even with this Direct touch issue, I find I prefer typing in full screen mode because the typed words appear much larger and I'm better able to use my bit of remaining vision. This benefit outweighs the cost of the local app being off screen since once full screen FlickType is dismissed, the local app is present with the FlickType entered text in place.

Thus it seems that Flicktype is actually moving through the list of alternate words when flicking down but not speaking these words. Note: This bug only seems to occur when in the Messages and Mail apps, but not the main flicktype app. When in the main Flicktype app the alternate words are spoken as one flicks down. Hope that is clear. --pete

Re: Unable to hear alternate word selections

I am using the Standard Flicktype keyboard.

I tried the Full Screen keyboard but couldn’t even dismiss it with the flick down and hold gesture. So I switched back. Besides, with the full screen keyboard I couldn’t see any of the app on the screen with VoiceOver. --Pete

I don't believe you mention whether you're using full screen or not. The continuing issue I have with FlickType with both Mail and Messages where I use it 99% of the time is the need to activate direct touch each time I launch the FlickType keyboard. If I don't do this, tapping on the keyboard does nothing. When Direct touch is activated, typing works fine and all the predicted words are spoken as well as other choices when I single finger flick down. I just get tired of having to rotor to Direct touch and turn it on every time I go to the full screen FlickType keyboard. Good luck with resolving your issue. So here goes... My System: iPhone Xr iOS 14.2 VoiceOver Latest Flicktype beta Problems: typing seems to work fine in the Flicktype app itself, but not when using apps such as Messages, or Mail. 1. Create a text message or start a new e-mail message and activate the edit field for the message body. 2. Type a word and flick right. Flicktype speaks the word that was entered, as it should. 3. Assume that we want to change this word. So we flick down through the various suggestions. 4. Instead of speaking the alternate suggestions in the list as it should, Flicktype merely says "space". 5.
