Hi Pete,

I've noticed the same thing with FlickType on my SE 2020 running iOS 14.0.1. I've been unable to determine any pattern regarding what causes it to stop working but when it does, I've been losing what I've typed in that session and have had to go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and delete the FlickType keyboard and reinstall it to get things working again. I've posted a couple of times here about the issue but haven't seen anything from Kosta or from anyone else with a workaround.

I am running iOS 14.1 on an iPhone XR with Voiceover.

I am still occasionally seeing the issue that, when I try to use Flicktype, touch Typing seems to be turned off and Flicktype won’t work properly until I turn this off in the rotor setting.

This seems to mostly happen when I try to Share a news article from the Apple News app via a text message or e-mail.

Mostly Flicktype works as expected, but sometimes seems to get into this mode where Touch Typing is automatically turned off.

Can anything be done about that?

Thanks.

More details about FlickType and iOS 14 issue

Hi Kosta and List,

I'm a big believer in providing as many details as possible when reporting an issue. The main problem I'm having with FlickType and iOS 14 is the inability to switch keyboards when typing with FlickType in full sized mode. I've changed the setting to standard size and am at least able to send texts in this mode as I have access to the send button. I am noting that in standard mode, the button to switch keyboards does not seem to be available. At least when I touch in that area of the screen where it's supposed to be, all I hear is FlickType and nothing else.

I also want to report that when my FlickType setting is on full sized keyboard, the button to switch keyboards which is to the left of the spacebar does not bring up the keyboard that is announced by Voiceover when it is double tapped. I have to double tap and hold on the next keyboard button and slide up and release on the one I want for it to bring up the correct one. This worked correctly in the last version of iOS 13. I have four software keyboards installed, US English, Emoji, FlickType, and Key Wi.

I've changed back to the FlickType version available in the App Store but I'm having these problems with the latest beta version as well. I hope a fix will be forthcoming soon.

I'm running IOS 14.2 beta 2 you you have to turn direct touch on every single time you want to use flick type. This is obviously an Apple thing that they need to address.

Inconsistent iPhone FlickType keyboard behavior since iOS 14

Hi Kosta and List,

I hope you are working on a resolution to the inconsistent behavior I'm getting with FlickType since upgrading to iOS 14. Any suggestions for a workaround until this issue is corrected would also be appreciated.

I'm using FlickType in full screen mode and sometimes after working perfectly for several sent text messages and emails, I'll be composing another message with FlickType running and when I attempt to single finger swipe up and hold to change keyboards, nothing happens. Trying to access the rotor to activate direct touch isn't available and sometimes the only thing that works is doing a magic tap two finger double tap. That will sometimes close FlickType and take me back to the app I started with which is usually the Messages app but Voiceover isn't speaking. I then usually go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and delete the FlickType keyboard and reinstall it.

I'm using the current beta version but was having this issue with both the downloadable version and other beta versions.

Thanks for resolving this issue with a future upgrade and for sharing any workarounds until that is available.

FlickType keyboard in iOS 14 inconsistent and unacceptable

Hi Kosta and List,

I've gotten very inconsistent behavior from the FlickType keyboard on my iPhone SE 2020 since upgrading to iOS 14 this past Saturday. When it works, it works great but when it fails, I've had to go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and remove it from the downloaded software keyboards. I use FlickType in full screen mode and when it isn't working, I can see the keyboard in the bottom third of the screen but tapping to input characters and words doesn't work and the single finger swipe up and hold to select another keyboard doesn't work and you're just sort of stuck. Trying to access the rotor and select direct touch is also inconsistent in correcting the issue.

Another developer, Winston Chen, who has the Voice Dream products, mentioned an issue with Voice Dream Writer and iOS 14. Specifically, he said:

I managed to fix this issue with the help of an Apple engineer. Actually, how VoiceOver handles the swiping gesture for an adjustable control has changed in iOS 14. The solution is that all increment/decrement actions from an adjustable, swipe-able control needs to be fire 0.4 seconds after the action.

Feel free to pass this on to other developers.

Winston.

I'm not a programmer and I have no clue whether any of the above applies to FlickType but I thought I'd pass it along in case it does. I do know that neither the latest beta of FlickType or the latest downloadable version from the App Store seems to correct the problem I'm having when it manifests itself.

I hope the above will help or if it doesn't relate, that we get a FlickType update that is specific to iOS 14 very soon.

Re: Direct touch and flick type

Hi Gordon,

I started getting flaky behaviour when typing with FlickType this morning. I did get a prompt from Flicktype itself about direct touch and activated it. These major iOS upgrades always seem to take a few days for kinks to be worked out. I've experienced VoiceOver lag times on my SE 2020 but didn't have them immediately after the upgrade as others did but had them a couple of days later. After I switched to a Siri voice, I noticed much faster responsiveness. But now that I've returned to Samantha enhanced, my responsiveness is back to normal. I should have learned by now not to be inpatient after a major iOS upgrade but to be patient and give it a few days to settle.

You're not going to find it in rotor settings. It only comes up in
certain circumstances. And when it does come up, it will appear in the
rotor where you can turn it on or off. I was a bit surprised to see it
come up with flick type because the keyboard isn't a self voicing app.
Direct touch will come up most likely if you're playing a game which is
self voicing and doesn't use voice over as a screen reader. It's
supposed to serve as a way to temporarily ignore voice over as if you
turned it off while interacting with an app.

Actually it's strange, I don't have to turn direct touch on each time I use flick type, but I do for Vorail. I wonder if this is something that Apple is going to have to change on their end?

Yes, same problem here. Direct Touch seems to get set to "off" when Flicktype is invoked under iOS 14. Even if you turn it "on", the next time you try to use Flicktype it will be turned "off" again automatically. Fortunately the workaround is easy, but hopefully this can be fixed in the app.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but flick type wasn't responding earlier. I finally figured out why. I had to find direct touch in the rotor and turn it on. It somehow got turned off. Direct touch has been around for a long time, but it's more persistent in IOS 14. So if the keyboard isn't working as it should find direct touch in the rotor and flick up or down to turn it on.

Re: Flicktype on watch

Hi Kosta,

No, , am unable to tap on words. I tried doing the word, top, and it said, tip. So I scrolled the crown down and it just said the same thing, flicktype, use digital crown to scroll through suggestions. Since the crown did give me the haptic feedback like it did scroll down, I tapped on the screen like I was choosing the word it scrolled to, but nothing happened. It just acted like I was trying to type another word.

I am unable to access the rotor because the rotor is only available on the new watch os 7. I do not think you can install that unless you are running ios 14 on your phone, and because of multiple bugs, I am not doing that at this time.

Thanks for looking into this issue for me!

Chris

Thank you for the clarification, Chris.

When you try to tap words, does that work, or do you also keep hearing VoiceOver announcing “FlickType”?

If so, try to invoke the rotor while FlickType is on the screen, and turn on “Direct Touch”.

Let me know if that helped!
