Hi,
With all the craziness the developer is currently going through, should I be worried that flicktype could disappear from the AppStore tomorrow?

I just wanted to mention that since the last couple or so updates, it seemed like the ability to access any of the app settings went away since the app would prompt the user to either make the purchase or restore their purchase. Tapping on the restore option gave me the error stating that no previous purchase was found. This was the case in the App Store version as well as the beta version. I ended up purchasing again to allow me to access the settings.
Thought I'd mention this since it seems that the record of the purchase that we made previously, was not picked up via the restore option.

They could sue! I’m sure they have patents and trademarks, but it’s time consuming and extremely costly. Enough to put Indy developers out of business. Could take years and like playing whack a mole. There’s another counterfeiter right behind them.
This is an Apple problem. There’s glaring issues with app approval process. There’s no incentive for them to help developers like Kosta and Ashley. Apple is going to get their cut, no matter who it comes from. How bout them apples?
It’s things like this that are putting the microscope on Google and Apple. For very good reason!!!

Hello Kosta and Ashley,

I am sorry to hear what you’ve been going through with the App Store. I hope you get all of those issues resolved sooner than later.

One of the big show stoppers for me is Flicktype not working in the mail application. I am also having a bunch of issues in 3rd party apps with FlickType not entering text in to the text field. Or the text field not recognizing the text entered and telling me to finish the form or entry. I’m honestly wondering if this is because of swiping to enter the word and it enters a space as that’s the Flicktype behavior.

One of the biggest issues for me is the space at the front of the first line of text, This happens all the time and it makes text on social media posts for my business look off and weird.

Voiceover is still having issues and stuttering after you insert a wor. It doesn’t read the word properly nor does it spell the word out correctly most of the time.Spelling the word out is the biggest issue for me in these two problems. VO starts reading the word in the middle of the word most of the time.

Also in some apps Flicktype can not be switched. Ie. I can not switch to the iOS keyboard. This is a problem mostly in number text fields.

Current show-stopping issues

Hi all,

I’d love to confirm any current show-stopping issues with FlickType and see if there’s anything I could do about them.

My understanding is that the main Direct Touch issue is solved with iOS 14.4, and that FlickType on watchOS 7.3 in unusable due to the lack of Direct Touch in the rotor.

It was also brought to my attention that the share/export button of the text in the container app is missing in the latest update, which was not intended and I will fix.

Thank you for your patience and support,
Kosta

Hi,
I’m not sure who to report this to, but if you want to use the outlook app, and have an Apple Watch, be aware that when you get a notification on your watch, voiceover won’t read it. The way I get around this, is to dismiss the notification, by pressing the digital crown, then going to the notification center, to check it.

Hello Gina,
If you are using FlickType in the native mail app, these kind of problems are inherent, and Kosta has not been able to fix them. It has something to do with the new construction of the mail app by Apple, and Fliktype and Apple‘s iOS mail client does not play well together.
You shouldn’t have these problems in other applications such as messages.

That’s too bad.  If one can’t rely on the keyboard working properly maybe its time to revert back to the standard keyboard.  Flicktype was a nice advance for blind individuals but it does take a lot of support effort to keep these apps running as each new version of the OS and apps come out.  Not an easy task and we’re a very small community of users.

I would love to see apple pick up the flicktype paradigm for it’s own keyboard since, when working properly, it is very easy and efficient to use for blind folks.  But I wouldn’t hold my breath.  Kosta is only one person and eventually one has to move on.

Thank's so much for the update. I'm not finding that the issue is really fixed. I'm using an IPhone 10 R, and every time I use Flicktype I keep losing focus. I'll play around with the different screen modes to see if that makes a difference.

In IOS 14.4 direct touch works as it did in IOS 13. You can set it to be on or off for specific apps, but by default it's on for all apps. So you wont have to turn it on each time you wish to use flick type. I use flick type every single day and it works well. I don't know when 14.4 will go public, but I would think pretty soon. I've been running the beta and it's working well and even has big battery life improvements. So this is an update you'll all want to get as soon as it goes live to the public.

I'm having the same issues as far as FlickType staying in Direct Touch.
Too bad there wasn't a way to keep that setting on in the app settings
itself.

So this is an update you'll all want to get as soon as it goes live to the public.

hi Peter,

Considering the way is behaving, I’m pretty sure it’s an iOS problem, and not a Fliktype problem.

Someone claims that this will be fixed in iOS 14.4. Will have to wait and see!

Although it is kind of a pain, the workaround works OK, it’s only a couple more movements, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it 😎

Would be nice to know if this is a bug in iOS 14 or Flicktype itself.  The problem has existed for some time now.  If you depend on this keyboard it can be frustrating.
