Re: Unable to hear alternate word selections

Hi Alan. I use FlickType in standard mode here and the direct touch issue is present on my SE 2020 running the beta of iOS 14.3. Direct touch has nothing to do with your typing mode. It's supposed to work in self voicing games as well but like FlickType, you have to turn direct touch on in order to play the game without having to turn off Voiceover. Back to the issue with Flicktype, when you're trying to type using the keyboard, when Voiceover says you're in FlickType, turn Voiceover off and back on again. That'll resolve the issue when you use it once or twice.

Regards,
Shawn,

Thanks for that tip but I use my phone locked in portrait mode and don't expect I'll be changing my ways at this stage of the game.

I'll try your suggestion of removing typing mode from the rotor since I already have touch typing set as my default under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Typing. I really don't think that will change anything because FlickType is supposed to automatically do whatever is needed with direct touch when typing with it and something with iOS 14 is apparently messing it up.

Hello Ellen,
Just an FYI, if you use FlickType in the standard mode, when you turn it into landscape, it goes to full screen. That’s how are use it, and it works quite well.

Yes, that's one of the issues with FlickType and the full screen keyboard. The dismiss gesture and none of the tapped keys register unless you first rotor to direct touch and turn it on. Even with this Direct touch issue, I find I prefer typing in full screen mode because the typed words appear much larger and I'm better able to use my bit of remaining vision.  This benefit outweighs the cost of the local app being off screen since once full screen FlickType is dismissed, the local app is present with the FlickType entered text in place.

I am using the Standard Flicktype keyboard.

I tried the Full Screen keyboard but couldnt even dismiss it with the flick down and hold gesture.  So I switched back.  Besides, with the full screen keyboard I couldnt see any of the app on the screen with VoiceOver.

Hi Pete,

I'm not having your same issue with the latest FlickType beta but I have my FlickType setting to use full screen. I don't believe you mention whether you're using full screen or not. The continuing issue I have with FlickType with both Mail and Messages where I use it 99% of the time is the need to activate direct touch each time I launch the FlickType keyboard. If I don't do this, tapping on the keyboard does nothing. When Direct touch is activated, typing works fine and all the predicted words are spoken as well as other choices when I single finger flick down. I just get tired of having to rotor to Direct touch and turn it on every time I go to the full screen FlickType keyboard.

Good luck with resolving your issue.

I brought up this issue in the Test flight beta feedback on my iPhone, but I can write a better and more detailed report on my PC.  So here goes...

My System:
iPhone Xr
iOS 14.2
VoiceOver
Latest Flicktype beta

Problems:  typing seems to work fine in the Flicktype app itself, but not when using apps such as Messages, or Mail.

1.  Create a text message or start a new e-mail message and activate the edit field for the message body.
2.  Type a word and flick right.  Flicktype speaks the word that was entered, as it should.
3.  Assume that we want to change this word.  So we flick down through the various suggestions.
4.  Instead of speaking the alternate suggestions in the list as it should, Flicktype merely says "space".
5.  If I now flick left to delete the last entered word, Flicktype speaks one of the alternate suggestions.  Thus it seems that Flicktype is actually moving through the list of alternate words when flicking down but not speaking these words.

Note: This bug only seems to occur when in the Messages and Mail apps, but not the main flicktype app.  When in the main Flicktype app the alternate words are spoken as one flicks down.

Hope that is clear.

Hi Pete,

I've noticed the same thing with FlickType on my SE 2020 running iOS 14.0.1. I've been unable to determine any pattern regarding what causes it to stop working but when it does, I've been losing what I've typed in that session and have had to go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and delete the FlickType keyboard and reinstall it to get things working again. I've posted a couple of times here about the issue but haven't seen anything from Kosta or from anyone else with a workaround.

I am running iOS 14.1 on an iPhone XR with Voiceover.

I am still occasionally seeing the issue that, when I try to use Flicktype, touch Typing seems to be turned off and Flicktype won’t work properly until I turn this off in the rotor setting.

This seems to mostly happen when I try to Share a news article from the Apple News app via a text message or e-mail.

Mostly Flicktype works as expected, but sometimes seems to get into this mode where Touch Typing is automatically turned off.

Can anything be done about that?

Thanks.

Subject: [FlickType] Still Occasionally Wind Up With Touch Typing Off

I am running iOS 14.1 on an iPhone XR with Voiceover.

I am still occasionally seeing the issue that, when I try to use Flicktype, touch Typing seems to be turned off and Flicktype won’t work properly until I turn this off in the rotor setting.

This seems to mostly happen when I try to Share a news article from the Apple News app via a text message or e-mail.

Mostly Flicktype works as expected, but sometimes seems to get into this mode where Touch Typing is automatically turned off.

Can anything be done about that?

Thanks.

More details about FlickType and iOS 14 issue

Hi Kosta and List,

I'm a big believer in providing as many details as possible when reporting an issue. The main problem I'm having with FlickType and iOS 14 is the inability to switch keyboards when typing with FlickType in full sized mode. I've changed the setting to standard size and am at least able to send texts in this mode as I have access to the send button. I am noting that in standard mode, the button to switch keyboards does not seem to be available. At least when I touch in that area of the screen where it's supposed to be, all I hear is FlickType and nothing else.

I also want to report that when my FlickType setting is on full sized keyboard, the button to switch keyboards which is to the left of the spacebar does not bring up the keyboard that is announced by Voiceover when it is double tapped. I have to double tap and hold on the next keyboard button and slide up and release on the one I want for it to bring up the correct one. This worked correctly in the last version of iOS 13. I have four software keyboards installed, US English, Emoji, FlickType, and Key Wi.

I've changed back to the FlickType version available in the App Store but I'm having these problems with the latest beta version as well. I hope a fix will be forthcoming soon.

Thanks for confirming.  It would be nice if this could be fixed since it is a disincentive for relying on the keyboard.

I'm running IOS 14.2 beta 2 you you have to turn direct touch on every single time you want to use flick type. This is obviously an Apple thing that they need to address.

Inconsistent iPhone FlickType keyboard behavior since iOS 14

Hi Kosta and List,

I hope you are working on a resolution to the inconsistent behavior I'm getting with FlickType since upgrading to iOS 14. Any suggestions for a workaround until this issue is corrected would also be appreciated.

I'm using FlickType in full screen mode and sometimes after working perfectly for several sent text messages and emails, I'll be composing another message with FlickType running and when I attempt to single finger swipe up and hold to change keyboards, nothing happens. Trying to access the rotor to activate direct touch isn't available and sometimes the only thing that works is doing a magic tap two finger double tap. That will sometimes close FlickType and take me back to the app I started with which is usually the Messages app but Voiceover isn't speaking. I then usually go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and delete the FlickType keyboard and reinstall it.

I'm using the current beta version but was having this issue with both the downloadable version and other beta versions.

Thanks for resolving this issue with a future upgrade and for sharing any workarounds until that is available.

FlickType keyboard in iOS 14 inconsistent and unacceptable

Hi Kosta and List,

I've gotten very inconsistent behavior from the FlickType keyboard on my iPhone SE 2020 since upgrading to iOS 14 this past Saturday. When it works, it works great but when it fails, I've had to go into Settings, General, Keyboard, and remove it from the downloaded software keyboards. I use FlickType in full screen mode and when it isn't working, I can see the keyboard in the bottom third of the screen but tapping to input characters and words doesn't work and the single finger swipe up and hold to select another keyboard doesn't work and you're just sort of stuck. Trying to access the rotor and select direct touch is also inconsistent in correcting the issue.

Another developer, Winston Chen, who has the Voice Dream products, mentioned an issue with Voice Dream Writer and iOS 14. Specifically, he said:

I managed to fix this issue with the help of an Apple engineer. Actually, how VoiceOver handles the swiping gesture for an adjustable control has changed in iOS 14. The solution is that all increment/decrement actions from an adjustable, swipe-able control needs to be fire 0.4 seconds after the action.

Feel free to pass this on to other developers.

Winston.

I'm not a programmer and I have no clue whether any of the above applies to FlickType but I thought I'd pass it along in case it does. I do know that neither the latest beta of FlickType or the latest downloadable version from the App Store seems to correct the problem I'm having when it manifests itself.

I hope the above will help or if it doesn't relate, that we get a FlickType update that is specific to iOS 14 very soon.

Re: Direct touch and flick type

Hi Gordon,

I started getting flaky behaviour when typing with FlickType this morning. I did get a prompt from Flicktype itself about direct touch and activated it. These major iOS upgrades always seem to take a few days for kinks to be worked out. I've experienced VoiceOver lag times on my SE 2020 but didn't have them immediately after the upgrade as others did but had them a couple of days later. After I switched to a Siri voice, I noticed much faster responsiveness. But now that I've returned to Samantha enhanced, my responsiveness is back to normal. I should have learned by now not to be inpatient after a major iOS upgrade but to be patient and give it a few days to settle.

You're not going to find it in rotor settings. It only comes up in
certain circumstances. And when it does come up, it will appear in the
rotor where you can turn it on or off. I was a bit surprised to see it
come up with flick type because the keyboard isn't a self voicing app.
Direct touch will come up most likely if you're playing a game which is
self voicing and doesn't use voice over as a screen reader. It's
supposed to serve as a way to temporarily ignore voice over as if you
turned it off while interacting with an app.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but flick type wasn't responding earlier. I finally figured out why. I had to find direct touch in the rotor and turn it on. It somehow got turned off. Direct touch has been around for a long time, but it's more persistent in IOS 14. So if the keyboard isn't working as it should find direct touch in the rotor and flick up or down to turn it on.
