Why can't I upgrade?

I tried to use the keyboard through messages on my iPhone, but it says I need to upgrade. The upgrade tab in the app but it is dimmed it is not letting me upgrade. Do I need to buy different version? What do I need to do? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
