Re: a few bugs

Hi Rocco,

Super appreciate the thoughtful feedback and nice words!

For 1, is this something that's new behavior or has it always been this way? Either way, I've added it to our bug list. Another user just reported 2 this week, so we have that on the list and will be addressing it asap. For 3, my assumption is the two taps are quick in succession and the system registers them as a left flick rather than two taps. Will check with Kosta to learn whether we can implement a workaround. For 4, if you manually type a word at the beginning of a sentence you will have the word in the dictionary lowercase because the system assumes the word was meant to be lowercase, but I am unable to reproduce what you're reporting with the double entry. Have you noticed whether this happens when you type the word at the beginning or the middle of the of the sentence? What keyboard size? Anything you can provide to help me reproduce is appreciated!

Thanks for also submitting these suggestions! For the text field, unfortunately, FlickType cannot identify which text field you're typing in. If so, it would be a great idea! Let's keep thinking of fixes for this specific problem because it can get annoying to have every web address or email address added to your dictionary. We've had a few people ask about the number pad, so we'll look into a way of implementing an option, will take some time though due to the complications with the symbols also being displayed currently with the numbers. The reason we originally changed it was because people felt like it was too different from what they were used to with iOS.

Will be excited to hear your thoughts on the watch once you get around to trying it out!

Thanks again for the very helpful feedback!

a few bugs

Hi Ashley and Kasta,

I’ve noticed a few interesting bugs crop up lately, and had a few ideas I wanted to share with both you and the rest of the community and see what the consensus was. :) You guys are doing incredible work, and I’m very excited to see where this app can go from here!

Bugs:
1. When entering a new line, either manually via touch typing or via the flick and hold shortcut, you can’t delete the return after it’s inserted. Flicktype instead deletes the previous word. For example, if I were to write "hi
"
and then try to delete just the return so I could continue typing on the same line, Flicktype deletes both the new line and the word hi.

2. Similarly, it seems as though new lines do something strange to Flicktype’s processing, because I can’t think of an exact example off the top of my head, but multiple times when manually entering a new word at the beginning of a line, Flicktype doesn’t connect the letters or adds spacing, etc. But if there is no new line before the word this doesn’t happen.

3. This may very well be human error, but I find that at times when I’m typing a word, Flicktype instead thinks I’m swiping left, and will say "clear taps" in the middle of the word. Not necessarily a bug, just wondering why this might be happening?

4. For some reason, multiple instances of a word become added to my dictionary, with capital differences. For example, if I manually type the name Nicole, I’ll have 2 entries in the dictionary. One is "nicole" and another is "Nicole" even though I’ve only manually entered "Nicole." Another example of this is acronyms. I’ll manually type "AES" and I’ll get "aes" and "AES"

ideas/requests:
1. Speaking of the dictionary, is Flicktype able to tell what kind of text field it’s typing in, such as whether I’m using the keyboard to type a text or email, or whether I’m in Safari’s address bar? If not, I’m not sure of a way around this, but if so, it would be nice if it would automatically, or have the option of, excluding things like URLs or web searches that need to manually typed from being entered into the dictionary.

2. Would it be possible to have the option of displaying numbers like a traditional keypad like earlier versions of FlickType, instead of the classic iOS way of the numbers keyboard? Just asking out of curiosity. :)

I haven’t had a chance to play with the watch app yet because I’m awaiting a new watch; my series 0 is way too old to do that kind of testing lol. But I can’t wait to see what that kind of flexibility brings to the platform. Thank you both for your tireless dedication, it’s much appreciated.

Best,

Rocco

Thanks Ashley,

Yes, when typing in the Mail app, if you type the first word of a new line manually, after you swipe right to confirm the word, you discover that an unwanted space has Ben inserted.

So if I were to type "Ashley" manually at the start of a line. As I type the letters, all seems well. But when I swipe right to complete the word, VoiceOver will say "shley", and navigating back, I will discover that what has been typed is "A shley".

Thanks,
Dave

I am seeing FlickType deleting text from a field, and when trying too save the text it reinserts the text that was deleted or it doesn’t add the corrected text to the proper field. This happens most frequently in the Phone application whilst editing names or phone numbers.

I am seeing some really weird things happen on websites such as signing into Twitter. If I use FlickType to enter the user name/email FlickType will insert a space between every letter if I manually type an email or user name. This is just on the sign in form at the front end of the Twitter.com website. Once in the app or website FlickType behaves and works properly.

I also am seeing the issue where FlickType is no longer announcing the single quote. It also is no longer announcing it when a word has a plural option or a contracted word. Such as Won’t. VoiceOver reads it as wont, the word it’s read as it’s. The single quote is ignored and this makes it very annoying and time consuming to use the minimal keyboard as you have to check if it is using the proper punctuation almost every time.

Hi Ashley, as far as financial apps, I think having FlickType yield to the ios keyboard is the way to go.
Most of these apps require little typing and some of the information that is input may be sensitive.

Just my opinion,

Thanks for circling over with this feedback. We're going to assume it's all issues you've experienced in minimal mode, which is helpful since we get very little feedback on that mode. We are aware that some of these issues are not minimal mode specific, and appreciate you bringing them back up. For the issue with finance apps, this is an Apple issue, but Kosta thinks he may be able to find a workaround so FT doesn't pop up at all.

For the manual typing issue when a space is added between the first and second character, do you get this behavior when you type the entire word manually?

Thanks again for the feedback!

Hey Kosta,

I have been running my iPhone in what I am calling silent mode. No VoiceOver sounds other than the Voice. No alert sounds and so on. I have been really annoyed with the act of manually typing with FlickType. I wish there was a setting to have haptic feedback only whilst typing in manual mode. I really find the click sounds really jarring as I don’t have any sounds on my phone playing. Would it be possible to add a no sound option that only has haptic feedback, or make the manual typing mode respect the sound settings of the FlickType app.

Thanks,

Firstly, may I apologise for being AWOL for the past several weeks, it's been a busy time and I fell a bit behind, though I have been using the keyboard constantly.
I'm all caught up now anyway☺️

I use the keyboard exclusively in minimal size mode, and wanted to report some bugs I've been experiencing.
Some of these date back a while and have been reported before.

- Doesn't consistently read apostrophe in word suggestions.
- Inserts space between first and second letter if you manually type the first word of a new line in Mail.
- The fixes to spacing between emoji characters was not brought across to the minimal size keyboard.
- Deleting text with a left swipe often does not tell you the word being deleted, instead saying something like "bottom of document" or “beginning of document”.
- Still inserting a space if you type a word, swipe right to confirm it, then type a quotation mark.
- Very eratic typing behaviour when typing in some text fields on the web, including on applevis for example.
- FlickType keyboard will sometimes pop up in secure text fields and cannot be dismissed / changed. For example I've seen this when needing to type a pin code into my banking app, and the Apple Store app. I had to temporarily delete FlickType to get around it.
- Wrong character sometimes announced when manual typing.

I have not yet tried the Watch app, but will do so over the coming days.

Many thanks,
Dave

Hi Kosta,
Build 199 is working very well and seems even more responsive... If that is possible.

One thing I noticed, and I do not know if this is new, but when I hit the space bar, flicktype inserts a period. I have the spacebar active so, on rare occasions I can insert just a space.

Otherwise... Perfect!👍

Hi Ed,

I'll have to investigate the firm press issue - I haven't experienced that before.
On the tap feedback, it's a bit tricky to implement on watchOS but I'm looking into it. You can also try going to the watch settings, then Sounds & Haptics, and setting the alert volume to the maximum, ensuring haptic alerts are enabled and also set them to "Prominent".

Thank you for the reports!
