Re: Build 156

Michael Maslo

Hello Kosta and chuck.

Yes I have turned off the phone and restarted the phone. Let me preface by saying that I am using ios 12. Secondly, no this is a ongoing issue with focus being lost. This is the third attempt to write this email. I have a iphone x and to reproduce the issue is hard. I do not know when or if it will happen. This is what it does. I could be typing a email or text. I type a word and then when I type the wrong word and flick down the keyboard goes away. In a text message it is not that big of a problem. However in a email the keyboard goes away and the cursor when I try to bring the keyboard back up is in a different location. I usually cancel the email and start over again. This happens for me no matter if I use the full or half keyboard. This issue has been going on for a very long time. I have posted several times about this issue.

I hope what I am saying makes sense. If not please let me know.

Another issue I would like to raise again is around touch typing.
Often I navigate to a letter, lift my finger to type it and at the last second, VoiceOver calls out the letter beside the one I've typed. If I delete, I find that it did in fact type the letter I wanted. So the accuracy is actually good, but VoiceOver feedback is misleading me. It's rather jarring.
I know I raised this before, but I don't think I heard anything back about it.

Also, has anyone else felt that typing accuracy has taken a step backwards recently, or is it just me making more mistakes?

What's new:
- Half screen setting won't show when the app is downloaded from the App Store instead of TestFlight, until the feature is more stable. We are still working on it.
- Added "Tap feedback" setting for more responsive taps on touch down. See setting notes for more information.
- Added "Raise to Read Back" setting, off by default. See setting notes for more information.

Known issues with the half screen mode:
- If you move the app cursor inside a word, FlickType will crash. Only move the cursor by whole words to prevents this.
- When deleting the very last word of the document, iOS will announce "Bottom of document", suppressing the FlickType deletion announcement. A workaround is to always have a word or punctuation mark after your cursor while you compose your text. The same sometimes happens when changing a word.
- Other occasional crashes, particularly on iOS 12 betas.

The wrong key being announced in touch typing is not a new issue. I have had this happen many times before, but I just didn’t think it was that big of a deal.

I will look into the accuracy issue reported.

Regarding touch typing and a wrong key being announced at the last moment, is that a new problem with this build only?

Thanks,

Hello kosta ,
While typing an email reply I flicked right to insert a period , the screen flashed a couple of times and it changed to the iOS keyboard.
I could not get the iPhone to go back to the FlickType keyboard until I closed the app .

I have had this happen a couple of times in the past, it only seems to happen in email replies.

- Seems like iOS 12 betas are causing issues for some people, and there's even different reports for different betas. We'll do our best to make this work better given the moving target that iOS beta software is.
- Using the iOS gestures in half screen mode is a great idea and something we are seriously considering. There are some issues however with touches that might be consumed by FlickType's Direct Touch view, as opposed to the application above it which would only be receiving the top touch of your rotor gesture for example. This also relates to the size of the keyboard, and the smaller it is the easier it will be to perform the rotor gestures. We are investigating and we might try out a few different options here.
- We are still working on the iOS 11 crashes and hope to have an update over the next few days.

Please keep the feedback and ideas coming, as well as what iOS typing feedback settings you found work best with the half-screen mode so that we can be recommending them to people.

Re: Build 155

We will definitely add some more spelling feedback options. Thank you for the suggestion.

The new, larger keyboard letters might take a little bit more memory and thus theoretically cause more memory warnings which are shown as red screens. Warnings are just that, and we don't yet have any indication that the keyboard is any more likely to be terminated by iOS due to lower memory, compared to previous builds. Regardless, we'll add a toggle in the settings so you can disable the red screens, and only ask that you enable it when we know we have termination issues and need help debugging it.

Michael Maslo

Hello kosta, I am having major issues with flick type and half screen. I am using it with voice over. First when I was responding to this email, the cursor jumped all over the place. For example. I was typing and for no apparent reason the cursor jumped down to the middle of the message I was responding to. This happened several times before I got frustrated and went back to full size keyboard. Secondly, when typing and having to flick down the focus is lost and the keyboard disappears. It is past frustrating when this happens and this behavior has been evident for a very long time. I am running iOS 12 on a iPhone x

Hey Chuck,

Kosta could honestly keep using the menu system he has in place. He could simply add one more option that is the standard iOS keyboard size. This would be ok with me. The menu structure works great. No reason to reinvent the wheel for a menu selection option.

I just feel that there is a long distance to travel to find the send button in the messages app, because of this distance I keep on triggering the letters O and P. I have to delete them just about every time I look for the send button. This would be eliminated for me with a smaller keyboard option.

Thanks,

Ed

I don’t even know if this is possible, but it might be an idea.

Hello,

I have just installed iOS 12 beta 9 and all is well again with the FlickType half screen option. What ever Apple did in this build seems to have fixed the issues I was having with interacting with the upper half of the screen.

I personally would like to see the size of the keyboard a little smaller. I really don’t like the half screen option. I would like to see it the same size of the default iOS keyboard. In the future I would also like to see a minimal size keyboard, I really find myself missing this option from the original Fleksy days.

Thanks,

Hi Kosta ,
I am finding the ½ screen keyboard is working well as long as I do not try moving the cursor .

I find if I have to move the cursor I am better off using the rotor and flicking by word or letter , an obvious advantage of the ½ screen keyboard.
Also , when I need to read the text back, I simply touch in the text field and let VoiceOver review for me.

I am beginning to wonder if the to finger and three finger gestures are still necessary with the ½ screen keyboard .

Again , just spitballing.😎
