Re: Build 159

Build 160 is out, keeping this in the same thread.

What’s new:
- Disabled initial cursor position announcements. This should fix a few incorrect announcement issues when moving the cursor.
- Added "Standard" keyboard height option, which is slightly larger than the system keyboard. There is a known issue with this option not working correctly within the container app on iPhone X.

Thank you for the continued feedback. A gesture to change keyboard height on the fly is coming soon. Glad you like the visual announcements, Chuck. I was pretty excited when I was initially implementing it ☺️

Hi Kosta,
The present build is running well enough that I haven't gone back to the full screen keyboard since the release of 159. Once the cursor movement is predictable and the little voice glitches are taken care of, I think this ½ screen keyboard will be my default keyboard..
As it is right now, I have only reverted to the iOS keyboard in order to move the cursor.

Personally I have no problem with the current size of the ½ screen keyboard, but a smaller keyboard would be ok.

I think you're close to a release.😎.👍

Hello kosta,
I I am using an iPhone 8, running iOS 11.4.1 i
All the glitches I have reported pertain to the ½ screen keyboard.

As for moving line by line, I was talking about using the iOS rotor, selecting line and flicking up and down. It only moves one word at a time

- The voice being too high pitched when reading the typed word: David, what are your iOS typing feedback settings and iOS version? Anyone else experiencing that?

- The new multi-finger setting only affects the two finger single tap to toggle shift. When disabled, that gesture will not trigger a shift change. I will rename the setting to something better. This is more of a bandaid fix for now.

- When double tapping in the text field to move the cursor to the beginning or end of the text, VoiceOver will say the first or last word instead of "beginning of document" or "end of document". This should be fixed soon.

- I can not flick line by line, only word by word. Do you mean using the 3-finger gesture on FlickType? There is a known issue where the cursor will actually move over entire sentences as expected, but only the punctuation marks will be announced.

- When flicking through the text word by word with the iOS gestures, the last word in a sentence is not always announced. This should be fixed soon.

- While trying to reply to a email, I could not access the send button, I lost the email. Chuck, can you please elaborate on not being able to access the send button? And was the email saved as a draft? With the half screen mode, you should not ever experience text loss since all text changes are instantly reflected in the application's text field.

- I tried turning off multi finger gestures which did turn them off, but I tried typing words with a hard press to capitalize the word with no results. The first letter is announced but not typed. Chuck, I was not able to reproduce this.

- FlickType is no longer spelling back words to me, even though I have the setting turned on. David, is this with the half screen mode? Does restarting your device seem to fix it?

Hi Kosta and Ashley,

typing this in half scream mode, so far so good. The cursor is not moving around as it was before. So fingers crossed on that.
However I cannot seem to interact properly with the top half of the screen. I cannot move the cursor using the rotor for example.

when I swipe right a second time for a full stop, it is still saying "space". Although it looks like it is inserting the full stop.

In half screen mode, it is echoing entered characters even though I have that setting switched off.

I like the colour settings, though would like to have the option to switch off the gradient, and to choose the text colour as well.
That said, if half screen mode becomes solid, I'll be using that anyway.

The voice is too high pitched when reading the typed word. When I swipe down for other suggestions though those are fine. Again this is only in half screen mode.

Can you please explain what the new multi finger setting does?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Kosta, I have been using the ½ screen keyboard and have noticed the following glitches.
First, when double tapping in the text field to move the cursor to the beginning or end of the text, VoiceOver will say the first or last word instead of " beginning of document " or end of document ". This is a little confusing and not consistent with iOS.

Second, I can not flick line by line, only word by word.

Third, when I am flicking through the text word by word, the last word in a sentence is not always announced. If I flick past the end of the sentence a few words and then back, the last word will be announced... Sometimes.

Also, while trying to reply to a email, I could not access the sent . This only happened once, so far. Button While trying to get it to send, I lost the email. I am not sure what I did, and I am still looking for that email.

Otherwise, FlickType is typing well and I can interact with the top of the screen fairly well.😎

A little more work and this will be great.
Chuck

No, the wrong key being announced during manual typing is not a new issue. It is an old issue, one that has been reported before.
During manual typing, when the finger is lifted, voiceover will often announce the character adjacent to the one that was being typed. However when swiping left, one notices that the correct letter was indeed typed. It can get very confusing at times.
I have also noticed that the issue seems to occur more frequently on the left half of the keyboard, compared to the right. Not sure if anyone else has experienced or noticed this.

Hi Kosta and Ashley,

I unfortunately still cannot use the half screen mode. I tried to type an email, and half way through my first sentence, the cursor just jumped to another location in the text.

Another issue I would like to raise again is around touch typing.
Often I navigate to a letter, lift my finger to type it and at the last second, VoiceOver calls out the letter beside the one I've typed. If I delete, I find that it did in fact type the letter I wanted. So the accuracy is actually good, but VoiceOver feedback is misleading me. It's rather jarring.
I know I raised this before, but I don't think I heard anything back about it.

Also, has anyone else felt that typing accuracy has taken a step backwards recently, or is it just me making more mistakes?
I do really hope you can expand the dictionary too.

Many thanks,

What's new:
- Half screen setting won't show when the app is downloaded from the App Store instead of TestFlight, until the feature is more stable. We are still working on it.
- Added "Tap feedback" setting for more responsive taps on touch down. See setting notes for more information.
- Added "Raise to Read Back" setting, off by default. See setting notes for more information.

Known issues with the half screen mode:
- If you move the app cursor inside a word, FlickType will crash. Only move the cursor by whole words to prevents this.
- When deleting the very last word of the document, iOS will announce "Bottom of document", suppressing the FlickType deletion announcement. A workaround is to always have a word or punctuation mark after your cursor while you compose your text. The same sometimes happens when changing a word.
- Other occasional crashes, particularly on iOS 12 betas.

Please let us know your experience with the half screen mode, as well as what iOS typing feedback settings worked best for you.

Hi Kosta

When replying to an email , sometimes when I try to insert a period, nothing happens, then I flick left to see what was entered then I try to insert a period again and it will change to the iOS keyboard. Once I try to go back to the FlickType keyboard it takes a few attempts , but if I do get to the FlickType keyboard, I can not get anything to work. I then have to close the mail app in the app switcher and try again.

This has been happening since the introduction of the half screen keyboard . I haven't mentioned it before because I thought it was happening to everyone and would be fixed in the first few updates .

Hi Kosta,

Like Chuck, I am not seeing the cursor problems in full screen or nearly full screen mode, only in half screen mode.

The problem with VoiceOver announcing the wrong letter when touch typing goes back several builds, to whenever you fixed the problem of the wrong letter being typed.

This is the third attempt to write this email. I have a iphone x and to reproduce the issue is hard. I do not know when or if it will happen. This is what it does. I could be typing a email or text. I type a word and then when I type the wrong word and flick down the keyboard goes away. In a text message it is not that big of a problem. However in a email the keyboard goes away and the cursor when I try to bring the keyboard back up is in a different location. I usually cancel the email and start over again. This happens for me no matter if I use the full or half keyboard. This issue has been going on for a very long time. I have posted several times about this issue.

Warmly,
Kosta and Ashley

Hi kosta,

I understand that there are issues with the half screen keyboard. I am using the full screen keyboard currently but I have the same behavior. The reason I cancel the email is because by the time I find out where I am in the email, it is just faster to start all over.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Michael. I should remind you that the half screen mode still has a lot of stability issues, even separately from iOS 12 issues. So I just wanted to clarify, what keyboard height are you using? And when the keyboard goes away and the cursor has moved, why do you need to cancel the entire email and start over?

Thanks,
Kosta

Hello Kosta and chuck.

Yes I have turned off the phone and restarted the phone. Let me preface by saying that I am using ios 12. Secondly, no this is a ongoing issue with focus being lost.

I hope what I am saying makes sense. If not please let me know.

Hello,
What I was disagreeing with is your statement that you lose focus in a full screen mode.
I noticed no difference in the full screen mode now than before the half screen mode was introduced.
In full screen mode I don’t think I ever have the cursor move unexpectedly.

I am confused. What are you disagreeing with? It is good that your not having the issues which are being brought up. I lose focus sometimes when I am flicking down to select a different word. It is not consistent witch makes it hard for me to say a exact time it happens. Sometimes it happens a few times in a text or sometimes it does not happen at all. For example this email it did not happen at all.
