The way I see it though, this would not affect the very important function that you mention. After manually typing a word, the first swipe right just confirms the word, a swipe down gives you alternative suggestions, while a swipe up does nothing. Emoji and punctuation require a second swipe right.

Previously this was done with a swipe up after confirming the word, which worked well.

I also wonder if you might consider bringing back the one finger swipe up to capitalize a letter? The reason I ask is that the iPhone X R does not have 3D Touch, and it seems very possible that Apple will kill the feature entirely.
Your implementation of 3D Touch is the best I've seen, and the only thing I would really miss! I'm probably going to get the next version of the XR this year, and would hate to lose the ability to type as I do now, I don't like the two finger tap method at all.

My final question is kinda from left field...
Are you by any chance considering taking FlickType across to Android?

Re: a few notes about the latest FlickType engine

Rocco Fiorentino

Hi Kosta,

Apologies for the late reply, things have been crazy for me lately.

I am using VoiceOver with Flicktype, and I’ve seen the accuracy issue with VoiceOver on. I have no vision at all, so I can’t really test without Voiceover unfortunately haha :) An example of this though is if I type the word "cookie" the first three suggestions I get are "follow" "Sophie" and "Rookie", all of which are fairly far from the finger position of "c" "o" "o" "k" etc It’s almost like Flicktype can’t figure out where on the screen in relationship to itself that I’m typing..

I pretty much only use half screen mode now :) it’s awesome. But I can try and confirm in the next few days if it’s happening in full screen or not.

Another thing that I’ve noticed with punctuation, which may also only be a half-screen issue, is that in certain places and cases, it almost seems random, though I’ve seen it most in the GroupMe app, function, and anything I type after it will duplicate itself with every swipe. So if I type "hi" then swipe right for an emoji, it will write "hi." just fine. But when I swipe up to change to, let’s say a :), it will write "hi.." and with each subsequent swipe, will double the last function. So if it starts writing "hi.." then it will be "…." and then "…….." etc. This will also happen with characters, so if I write "hi" then swipe right and go through suggestions, with each suggestion it adds imaginary letters to what I typed making longer and longer word suggestions lol.
This whole thing is very rare though, so hard to replicate it.

And that weird thing that happens after a new line is inserted is still happening too. Just FYI.

I know some of this likely isn’t that helpful because it’s so vague; I’m sorry I don’t have more details to share, but I’ll try and document more when things happen. I write quite a bit of code myself, and I hate when I can’t replicate a bug that’s reported to me because of lack of information.

Thanks so much,

Rocco

On the punctuarion, I believe this is an issue with the half screen mode and not the full screen keyboard, can you please confirm if you experience any difference in behavior when changing the keyboard size?

a few notes about the latest FlickType engine

Rocco Fiorentino

Hi all,

Just wanted to quickly write down a few new behaviors I’m noticing, and see if I’m the only one noticing them or if they’re being caused by the latest few builds of FlickType:

1. The release notes said that the internal engine was rewritten to improve accuracy, but maybe it’s just me, but I’m finding that words are more inaccurate now then I’ve ever seen. I would say for me, Flicktype’s accuracy rate was about 90 to 95% accurate on the first or second try of a word. Now, that’s probably about 60% or less, and I find myself typing the same word multiple times, often in different positions, to get the right one to show up.
2. I’ve noticed that when typing out shortcuts, for example "BTW" to create "by the way", the shortcut is a long way down the list of suggestions, where it used to be the first or second one in the list. Is there a reason you can think of why this could have happened, or ways to reorder the suggestion list, etc? Just curious :)

3. This is not introduced in the latest build, but has been a consistent bug for a while, and I’m not sure when it started. But I’ve noticed that punctuation is no longer spaced correctly. Emoji’s should have a space before and after them, and parentheses and quotation marks shouldn’t have spaces between the phrases they’re enclosing, but both are currently not the case. I’m sure you’re aware of this one, but just wanted to list it here.

This app is still the best typing experience I’ve ever had on a touch screen, and I sincerely appreciate your hard work and dedication to it.

Thanks,

Rocco

Dear FlickType friends,

This is a major internal update, which includes a complete re-write of the word correction engine which occurred over the last several weeks. The two primary goals of this effort are:

1. To dramatically bring down our memory usage, to avoid the keyboard getting killed by the strict memory limits on the iPhone and Apple Watch. This happened too frequently with earlier versions, and because the keyboard is quickly restarted by the operating system, you might not realize it has crashed but it will instead exhibit other, unpredictable behavior.

2. To improve accuracy over time. Even though in this version we are only aiming for parity with earlier versions, the new code allows us to more easily make progress towards this goal in the near future. Some people might feel that accuracy is already good enough for them, but this does not hold for everyone's way of typing. With the new structure, we should also be able to eventually correct for missing taps on longer words, as well as common word misspellings.

This build is expected to have plenty of issues given the number of changes that have gone in without extensive user testing. If you find it unusable for any reason, please revert to either an earlier beta build or the current App Store version.

As always, thank you for testing,
Kosta

Re: Some questions

Ed Worrell

Hello,

I too am seeing some weird behavior in text fields. The biggest one for me is in the URL/search field in Safari. VoiceOver/FlickType will jump the focus out of the keyboard while I’m typing. I can maybe get two letters in while trying to type out a search or website. It’s not very easy to use. This happens every time as of lately.

3. Any progress on on the manual typing of the first word of a line in Mail?
4. I'm seeing some odd behaviour in the Type tab of the app. VoiceOver focus keeps jumping to a dismiss button as I try to type. It's the first time I've been in that tab in months though, so don't know if it's a regular thing.

Re: Build 208

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the update, and that's great.

Regarding the capital letters, I fully agree with and understand your approach. But somewhere along the line it has broken down for me.
Names and acrinims for example that I have typed in the middle of sentences, are now in lower case. Well some of them anyway.
Best plan though is probably for me to delete them all and start over. I can then look for a pattern of behaviour, if indeed it does even happen again.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. And yes, what you're proposing with removing the bar above the keyboard when the visual announcements are turned off makes sense and something we'd be happy to do. For the mail app, Kosta has attempted a fix for this but had lots of trouble due to some super funky behavior on Apple's side. You bring up a great point that this is more common than we thought since FlickType doesn't do so great with commonly used smaller words like hi or hey. Kosta is going to take another pass at it and will keep us all posted on how it goes.

For the dictionary capitalization, is it when you manually type a word at the beginning of the sentence? Is this a common occurrence? We put lots of thought into how to deal with capitalization at the beginning of the sentence and felt storing the word with a lowercase letter would be correct more often than keeping the capital letter as we do if it is typed in the middle of a sentence.

Warmly,
Ashley
