I think the emoji short cut only works after you put punctuation in you your text. I'm not sure but this seems to be the only time they show up. So I think the flick up might still work to add a word

That might be the case too, since I always switch back to the IOS
keyboard, and as I've said before, I've never had the text vanish on
me.

You may have a point there. Swiping the same way is definitely more practical and simple. But you would still have to use 2 fingers to swipe as a single finger swipe up is reserved for

I would also like to see the return of the top row of symbols and shortcuts. I used them when needed, and while I have been working around not having them, they are very convenient.

I can confirm that finding. One of the last emails that I composed I too dismissed the keyboard and my text vanished. I also had to try again. In the second attempt I switched

As a low vision user, I find I do very little eye balling while using the FlickType keyboard.
Perhaps, if your co-worker would practice with the current version, the need for low vision
