Re: Build 88

David Nason

Hi Kosta and Ashley,

I am writing to you using build 88 so it does work anyway☺️

However the process of doing the upgrade was less than smooth.

 I pressed the upgrade button.
It brought up a dialogue box for me to enter my apple ID and password. Any reason why I can't use Face ID for this?
It seemed to fail the first time and brought the box up again. Maybe I had typed my password incorrectly, but I didn't think so.
It then did give me dialogue boxes thanking me and confirming I had successfully upgraded. But there were two or three of these, where I think one would be plenty.
It then brought up the apple ID and password dialog box again for some reason. I just pressed cancel this time though, and the keyboard is working.
After completing this process, there is no indication in the app that I am now subscribed, and the upgrade button is still there. I might expect an indication that I am already subscribed if possible, though it is at least confirm this if I press the upgrade button. However I then get an "upgrade failed" error message.
The first time I went back into the FlickType app after typing most of this email, it gave me the thank you dialog box yet again, though this behaviour does not appear to be repeating again every time.

There's a lot of changes under the hood in this release, so please report any unexpected behavior at all. We are also introducing the paid subscription feature, which has turned out to be quite complex to implement. Thankfully you can help us test out the purchasing flow, including deleting the app and then restoring your purchases upon re-installing, all free of charge. TestFlight will never charge real money, it will only simulate purchasing. We'd also love to hear your thoughts on the instructions and overall experience that a new user would have.

What's new:
- Updated content in "Welcome" tab.
- Added new "Upgrade" tab.
- The custom keyboard will now work without "Full Access", but it won't be able to play sound effects and will only have minimal touch typing functionality without flick gestures or tap typing, since it can't confirm the subscription without a network connection.
- Increased maximum emoji shortcuts from 6 to 10.

Warmly,
Kosta & Ashley

Okay, I can get Flick Type to work if I manually type letters But  the   FlickType gesture it’s not working. I have deleted and re-installed the app but still getting the same not subscribe.
Furthermore I tried the upgrade feature of got an error message from the iTunes Store. This could be because it’s only in alpha .

Bug when changing from upper case to lower case

David Nason

Hi Kosta and Ashley,

I've just discovered a bug. I've gone back to previous builds and it looks to have been introduced in build 85, and remains in build 86. It is not in build 83.

At the start of a sentence for example, the first letter is set to be upper case automatically. However you can change this to lower case by using either the 3D touch or the two finger tap gesture.
When I do this, I hit a bug after completing that first word and moving on to the next word or punctuation mark. On that word or punctuation mark, I can only swipe gown once, for example to the comma. After that it freezes up. A swipe left will then delete all of the text I had typed up to that point.

I hope that description is making sense. I will record a screen capture if needed.

I am on an iPhone X running iOS 12 beta 1.

Dave

touch the screen with three fingers. Is that not working for you?

Yes this was news to me too!
I still look forward to being able to cap the first letter with a 3D touch and then tap out the rest though.

Thanks Kosta, I must have missed the part about the shift key working for the next word, I automatically went to manual typing after using shift. As always you're one step ahead of the game😀👍

Both features you mentioned will be implemented soon. I should note
though, that even though you can't yet mix touch and tap typing for
the same word, you can invoke shift using the two finger tap and the
next word you tap type will have the first letter capitalized.

On the hyphen and equal signs, this is the signature at the very
bottom of quoted emails from the mailing list. Unfortunately, when
editing existing text the cursor usually goes to the very end of the
field, and we are unable to move past the current sentence or so that
iOS gives us. There might be some very hacky workaround I could do for
this, but hopefully the half screen mode will reduce some of that need
since you'd be able to move the cursor using the standard VoiceOver
gestures at the top half of the screen where the app is.

Re: Build 86

I should also clarify some terminology here, particularly touch typing versus tap typing:

What we're calling "touch typing" is the same as the iOS keyboard touch typing, where you get character feedback as you're exploring the keyboard and then you lift your finger to enter the desired character.
We came up with the term "tap typing" to describe the way of typing where you don't wait for character feedback, but instead tap each letter where you think it is.

In the future, you'll be able to mix and match touches and taps for the same word as needed.

Re: Build 86

Macster

Hi Kosta and Ashley,

This is yet another solid build. I've just typed a few of the train station names between here and Glasgow, dismissed the keyboard, brought it up again and hey presto they're in the dictionary. This is a genius idea and well executed first time! I don't think you are miles away from an app store version now, more dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

I agree with Ed that the flick left and hold to quick delete would be great, as is Chuck's phonetics request. I think I have only two more to suggest if that's ok...

1 After typing a word in the classic app, wait for a second and its spelled out letter by letter. Is it possible to implement this again? And...

2 If its possible, could the feature of being able to capitalize a letter and then FlickType the rest of the word in this version? For example, currently if I want to type radio with a capital R, I'd single tap with two fingers, press the R, but when I try to FlickType adio, I currently invariably get shop. I hope that feature is technically possible as I use it constantly. I'll need to delete adio from my dictionary now though😝

I like having the options of having the next keyboard button and even the spacebar button. I personally don't think I'll use them but some folk might and the level of customisation of recent builds is becoming more and more impressive.

Many thanks as always,

Macky
